| Charles O. Townley,
M.D.
Dr.
Charles O. Townley was a pioneer in orthopedic surgery. He graduated
from Ohio State College of Medicine in 1944 and completed his orthopedic
residency training in 1950 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
In addition to establishing the Townley Orthopedic Clinic in 1950,
he was very active in the design and development of new orthopedic
devices, implants and surgical techniques.
Recognized throughout the world for his achievements in orthopedic
research, Dr. Townley developed the world’s first anatomically-oriented
artificial total knee in 1972, The Townley Anatomic Total Knee.
Many of his other designs and techniques such as the Townley tibial
hemiarthroplasty in the 1940’s, the Total Articular Replacement
Arthroplasty (TARA) of the hip in the 1950’s, and his conventional
total hip replacement in the 1960’s, brought wide acclaim
for him as well.
He founded BioPro in 1987 for the specific purpose of designing,
manufacturing and distributing biologically oriented joint replacement
components. His implant designs reflect his long-standing belief
in minimal bone removal.
In addition to his inventions and research, Dr.Townley had written
and published over 26 scientific papers. As a guest speaker at numerous
Medical Society meetings and Physician Groups, he had lectured at
over 84 clinical symposia around the world from Australia to China.
He also held several U.S. patents.
Dr. Townley was a founding member and past president of The Knee
Society. Furthermore, he was a member of the American Academy of
Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the American
College of Surgeons, the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, the
Michigan State Medical Society, the International College of Surgeons,
the Clinical Orthopedic Society, the Association of Bone and Joint
Surgeons, the Pan American Medical Association, the Academy International
of Medicine, and the American Trauma Society. In 1992 he was the
recipient of the Life-Time Achievement Award given annually by the
Joint Implant Surgery and Research Foundation.
In addition to his active and productive career, he gave generously
of his time to share his knowledge and friendship with colleagues
around the world. Up to his passing, he continued to provide financial assistance to
a number of St. Clair County charities. Orthopedic surgeons, as
well as thousands of his patients, honor this philanthropist who
has given so much to reconstructive bone and joint surgery.
